Research Suggests Intravenous Ketamine Reduces Suicidality in Depressed Patients
In the September 1, 2009, issue of Biological Psychiatry, researchers at Rutgers University examined Ketamine’s effects on suicidality in patients with treatment-resistant depression. Previously used as an anesthetic, Ketamine has shown rapid antidepressant effects in early trials when applied intravenously. In a preliminary study with a small group of depressed patients, the results demonstrated an acute reduction in suicidal thoughts when patients were assessed 24 hours after a single intravenous (IV) injection of Ketamine. The observed reduction in suicidality was maintained over the next two weeks when patients received repeated doses.

According to corresponding author Rebecca Price, IV Ketamine treatment could provide an alternative treatment option in cases where the patient’s life might be endangered by waiting for conventional antidepressant treatments to take effect. In some cases, drug treatment options for depression can take weeks for the beneficial effects to emerge, which is greatly inadequate for patients with a high risk of immediate suicide.

Price cautioned that the findings from these early trials must also be observed in larger samples of patients with a high suicide risk. The findings present tremendous promise, however, and could potentially foster improved treatment options for suicidal patients in the future.

Pre-made, certified solution standards in single use ampoules can improve laboratory and material efficiency by eliminating the need to continually prepare and qualify fresh solutions on a routine basis. Cerilliant offers certified solution standards of numerous tricyclic, tetracyclic, SSRI, and SNRI antidepressants as well as their labeled internal standards and metabolites. We also provide certified reference standards of Ketamine and other hallucinogens including LSD, Mescaline, Psilocin, and Ibogaine.
