Jackson Death Ruled a Homicide
USA Today reported in its August 28, 2009, on-line edition that Michael Jackson’s death was ruled a homicide. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office determined the cause of death as “acute propofol intoxication.”(USA TODAY - Michael Jackson death a homicide)

The coroner indicated that other drugs contributed to the death, most notably Lorazepam. Lorazepam is sold under the brand name Ativan®. Additional drugs discovered in Jackson’s system included Midazolam, Diazepam, Lidocaine, and Ephedrine.

Jackson died June 25 at his rented Los Angeles mansion. According to court records, Dr. Conrad Murray, a Las Vegas cardiologist and Jackson’s personal physician, injected Jackson with two doses each of the sedatives Lorazepam and Midazolam over a six hour period. After an inability to fall asleep, Jackson asked Murray to administer Propofol, a drug Murray said he had given Jackson every night for six weeks.

Doctors commonly use Propofol to induce unconsciousness in patients prior to surgery. The drug is only to be administered by anesthesia professionals in medical settings. Due to its potency, Propofol use requires doctors to monitor the patient closely at all times. Using Propofol strictly as a sleep agent violates medical guidelines.
