Potentially Effective Male Contraception with Injectable Testosterone
According to a new study presented in the May 5, 2009 on-line issue of Science Daily,
researchers in China may have discovered an effective, reversible method for male
contraception without serious short-term adverse effects (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/05/090504094256.htm).
The reported male contraception method involved a monthly injection of a formulation
of testosterone undecanoate in tea seed oil for thirty months. The results showed
a cumulative contraception failure rate of 1.1 per 100 men in a 24 month period.
Male reproductive function returned to normal in all but two participants with no
observations of serious short-term adverse effects. The researchers, led by Dr.
Yi-Qun Gu, MD, of the National Research Institute for Family Planning in Beijing,
indicated the injection offers a novel, workable alternative to current methods
of male contraception. Dr. Gu emphasized that while their male contraception method
offered encouraging results, its long-term safety should be extensively evaluated
with an emphasis on cardiovascular, prostate, and behavioral safety.
