Proton Pump Inhibitors May Reduce Plavix® ’s Effectiveness
In its March 4, 2009 issue, the Journal of the American Medical Association published
a new study (http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/301/9/937)
concerning the impact of proton pump inhibitors on the effectiveness of Plavix® .
The study found that patients taking a proton pump inhibitor such as Nexium® or
Prevacid with Plavix® experienced an increased risk of adverse events
compared to those only taking Plavix® .
Researchers examined over 8,000 patients discharged from 127 Veterans Affairs hospitals
from October, 2003 to January, 2006. The study showed that 29.8% of patients on
a combination of Plavix® and a proton pump inhibitor were re-hospitalized or died
from cardiovascular problems compared to 20.8% of patients taking Plavix® alone.
The findings add to other studies which have suggested an adverse drug interaction
between Plavix® and proton pump inhibitors. While proton pump inhibitors may reduce
the effectiveness of Plavix® , the FDA has indicated there’s no evidence to suggest
that H2 blockers such as Zantac, Pepcid, or Tagamet show the same adverse effect.
Cerilliant offers a certified solution standard of Clopidogrel (C-085), the active
pharmaceutical ingredient in Plavix® , as well as other related Clopidogrel standards.
Cerilliant also offers certified solution standards of stomach acid drugs including
the proton pump inhibitors Omeprazole and Lansoprazole and the H2 blockers Ranitidine
and Cimetidine. Click on the link below to view these featured standards:
