Viagra^®’s Potential Heart Benefit: Protection from High Blood Pressure
According to researchers at Johns Hopkins University, Viagra® may protect the heart from high blood pressure damage. Sildenafil, the key ingredient in Viagra^®, appears to affect a regulator protein essential to reactions that protect the heart from moving into heart failure.

In findings published in the January, 2009, issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation (http://www.jci.org/articles/view/35620), researchers showed that Sildenafil enhances the protective effects of the RGS2 regulator protein in mice with induced high blood pressure. Sildenafil’s effect on hypertensive mouse hearts included less hypertrophy (dangerous muscle expansion) as well as stronger heart muscle contraction and relaxation. Stress-related enzyme activity in mice given Sildenafil was lowered as much as 10 times relative to their untreated counterparts. Additional experiments revealed that Sildenafil produced no effect in mice lacking the RGS2 protein.
